Concert Held at Saint Joseph University

This celebration honored the remarkable contributions and milestones reached in the world of classical piano, showcasing Mohtadi's dedication to the art and their role in elevating the Lebanese music scene internationally.

The ceremony highlighted the importance of nurturing talent in Lebanon and underscored the profound impact of cultural and musical achievements in promoting the country’s rich artistic heritage.

An honorary ceremony was held in recognition of the outstanding achievements in the piano career of Mohtadi.

The event was graced by the presence of His Excellency Dr. Ghattas Khoury, the Lebanese Minister of Culture, along with the esteemed Director of the Lebanese Conservatory.

Église Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre de Paris

This musical recital, performed by Mohtadi El-Hajj, was held at Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre Church in Paris, one of the oldest churches in the city, located in the heart of the French capital.

This church has also hosted performances by some of the most renowned pianists in the world, from the past to the present.

FRANCE - PARIS

Under the patronage of the Lebanese Ambassador in France, an honorary piano recital was held in the heart of Paris at the historic Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre Church. Pianist Mohtadi Al-Haj was invited to perform, showcasing his exceptional musical artistry.

During the event, Mohtadi was recognized with an award for his outstanding contributions to music and for elevating Lebanon’s name on the international stage. A commemorative shield was also presented to him as a token of appreciation.

Musical Evening at Sursok Museum

Under the patronage of MP Ghassan Moukheiber, an honorary ceremony was held for pianist Mohtadi El-Hajj at the Sursock Museum in Beirut. During the event, performed a selection of various classical compositions.

Working closely with someone on an ambitious professional musical undertaking leaves no doubts as to that person’s talent, professionalism and character. I rate Mr. Mohtadi El Hajj at the top in all of these categories. His philosophy could be called “Never stop, never give up.”

His professional approach was invaluable in resolving the complicated issues, human and artistic, which arise in his musical perform. He has a profound knowledge of scores and a very clear piano technique. When working with the orchestra there was a special rapport between pianist and musicians, and manage to convey his musical ideas clearly and quickly.

Biography



Mohtadi El Hajj
was born in Beirut and began his musical journey at the age of 6 when he started playing the piano.

His passion for music deepened at the age of 11 when he was first captivated by Beethoven's sonatas.
By the age of 15, he had begun performing piano concerts in various venues, showcasing his growing talent.

At 19, Mohtadi pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance at the Antonine School of Music .
His  academic journey was distinguished by his dedication to a challenging repertoire.
He continued his education at the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music, earning a License Diploma in Piano with an excellent grade.

Alongside his formal education, Mohtadi trained internationally with renowned figures such as Idil Biret, Alexander Muravyev, Gustav Fenyo, Elizabeth Sombart, and others, enriching his pianistic artistry.

Achievements

Mohtadi’s talent and skill have been recognized on prestigious international platforms:
  • IMPA Piano Concerto Competition, Moscow, Russia:
    He was selected to perform Rachmaninoff’s 3rd Piano Concerto in the final concert with the Ministry of Defense Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Ponkin, at the MosConcert Hall.
  • Danube Piano Concerto Competition, Budapest, Hungary:
    Winning first prize, Mohtadi performed in the final concert with the Danube Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Andreas Deak at the Danube Palace Concert Hall.
  • Singapore Piano Island Competition, Singapore:
    Winning third prize, Mohtadi successfully advanced to the highest stage of the competition. This achievement came after surpassing twenty highly skilled pianists from around the world, reflecting his dedication and artistry.

Solo Concerts

Throughout his career, Mohtadi has graced numerous stages with solo and orchestral performances. His repertoire and virtuosity have been recognized through letters of recommendation from world-renowned pianists.          Avec les mélodies de Schubert, Bach, Liszt et Chopin, il a fait résonner cet été les touches du piano dans l’enceinte du musée Sursock. Mohtadi el-Hajj, à trente et un ans, barbe lisse, silhouette romantique, fine et élancée, ne jure que par la musique...

         Né à Beyrouth, c’est à peine haut comme trois pommes, à six ans, à travers les notes noires et blanches d’un clavier et par le truchement des œuvres de Beethoven, que la révélation avec son destin est donnée à Mohtadi el-Hajj, que les familiers, aujourd’hui, appellent Mohtadi, en toute simplicité…

          La musique parle intensément à cet enfant qui dès l’âge de onze ans a reproduit, avec un sens remarquable des nuances, tout ce qu’il entendait. Sans discernement de solfège ni gammes basiques. Rien qu’à l’écoute et au flair, il entre de plain-pied dans l’univers de Bach, Liszt et Chopin… Dès qu’il s’assoit sur un tabouret face au piano, c’est une féerie et un enchantement qui s’échappent du bois lustré… D’ailleurs, c’est en ces termes qu’il confesse sa rencontre avec le piano : « Depuis mon enfance, quand j’écoutais des mélodies à la télé, à la radio ou en publicité, je les mémorisais et les jouais directement sur un petit orgue, en improvisant d’une manière polyphonique. Je suis sensible aux instruments à touches (keyboards !). Le piano a plus de dimensions musicales que d’autres instruments. Et puis surtout, c’est le seul instrument où dans une même mélodie on peut changer d’aspect et de couleur musicale en changeant l’harmonie et l’accord. »

        Mais il fallait tordre le cou à ce don naturel encombrant qui fait fi des normes et des conventions académiques. Et voilà que dès l’adolescence, sa formation, sérieuse et suivie, se peaufine grâce à la férule des enseignants à l’Université antonine, ensuite sous la baguette d’Armen Ketchek pour terminer au Conservatoire national supérieur de musique où il a obtenu haut la main son diplôme.

Au palais du Danube

           il joue à Moscou le 3e concerto pour piano et orchestre de Rachmaninov, avec un orchestre russe dirigé par le maestro Vladimir Ponkin. C’est ce qui l’a conduit à participer aux compétitions des concerts du Danube où il a fini par décrocher le prix Budapest en donnant, en soliste au piano, la réplique à l’Orchestre philharmonique du Danube sous la direction d’Andreas Deak. Un sentiment de plénitude et d’exaltation en emportant ce trophée au palais du Danube devant un public nombreux et étranger.

          Plus de vingt-cinq concerts déjà à son actif, dans une carrière qui s’affirme et prend de jour en jour de l’ampleur. Pour ce pianiste féru d’Idil Biret, Leslie Howard, Lazar Berman et Katsaris (et la liste pourrait s’allonger), et amoureux des partitions des Poèmes symphoniques et des Études transcendantales de Liszt, ainsi que des concertos pour piano de Rachmaninov et des œuvres de Richard Wagner, aujourd’hui, fort du prix Budapest qu’il vient de remporter et qui a braqué les spots sur lui, il met sous sa coupe public et pianophiles.

          Les conseils qu’il donnerait à un pianiste en herbe ? Il égrène en toute sincérité et avec aplomb : « Sacrifier tout pour la musique. Avoir une oreille “phénoménale” constamment à l’affût. Travailler et ne pas renoncer devant les difficultés liées à la vie et garder toujours intacte et vivante la passion pour le piano… »Des projets plein la tête et les doigts, il sera très prochainement à Londres et à Vienne. Mais rendez-vous fixé d’abord à Paris pour le 19 septembre à l’église Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre.
